The Moelven Wood division produces a wide range of highly-processed wood-based building and interior products sold mainly through builders’ merchants in Scandinavia. Production volume in 2008 was 900,000 cubic metres.
An important competitive advantage is the division’s streamlined distribution concept, which offers customers quick and accurate delivery of a wide range of products.
The Norwegian part of the Wood division, Moelven Wood AS, is Norway’s leading supplier of construction wood and wood-based interior and exterior products.
The Swedish part of the Wood division, Moelven Wood AB, is one of three leading suppliers of wood-based building, interior and board materials to Swedish industry and to the building trade.
Moelven in Denmark, Moelven Danmark A/S, supplies other wood products in addition to Moelven Wood products, sawn timber, board materials and construction wood to the building trade and industry segments.
The Wood division has nine production units in Norway and five in Sweden. It also has a comprehensive trade business in board materials and special types of wood in Sweden and in Denmark. These units generated a turnover of NOK 2,634 million in 2008. As of the beginning of 2009 there were 880 employees in this division, of which 582 in Norway, 271 in Sweden and 26 in Denmark.
Processing, planing and impregnation
The division has 14 production units, six of which combine a sawmill with a planing mill. Eight of the plants have special facilities for impregnating wood. The remaining units are processing plants that produce mouldings, flooring, interior panelling, construction wood and other building and impregnated wood.
Effective distribution
We have an effective distribution concept that provides our customers with the right products at the right time from all product groups. This together with our competent market organisation in Norway, Sweden and Denmark gives our customers access to total knowledge from one single supplier.
Products that are easy to use
The products in the Wood division can be divided into three main groups:
- construction wood for structures, facades, outside decks etc.
- interior products such as panelling, ceilings and flooring
- wood-based board materials for construction and industry, and specialised wood products.
The products are increasingly adapted to the growing consumer demand for products that require the least possible or no further processing after installation. In terms of external wood we offer facing that is pre-primed and/or pre-painted. Interior products include glazed and pre-painted panelling, surface treated flooring and mouldings and pre-cut mouldings for doors and windows.
User-friendliness and degree of finishing are important competitive factors for the Wood division where product developments are constantly under way.
Chippings, shavings and bark
We supply wood pulp to the paper and pulp industry and chippings and shavings to the particle board industry and to generate bioenergy. Bark is used to heat drying plants in our sawmills, and is also used for compost and soil improvement.
Local raw materials
Raw material for Wood division products are recovered from forests close to Moelven’s sawmills, and production takes place close to the raw materials in companies possessing a long tradition and sound knowledge of its product area.
Wood is the material of the future
Wood is a renewable and environment-friendly raw material with unique qualities that contribute towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Wood is both light and strong and is increasingly able to replace other materials consequently reducing the overall environmental impact. Greater environmental awareness and increased demand for environmentally sustainable products and production methods together with continued product development will lead to gradually increased demand for wood as a construction material and material for interior fittings.
